Alan Motluk

Artist Bio

Born and raised in Georgetown Ontario, Alan attributes his creativity to a childhood where he and his sisters were encouraged to create and choose their own items for play from the nature outside their doors and the on-going garage sale at the local recycling depot close by. Imagination and using materials-at-hand was encouraged and celebrated.

Alan continued this path of creativity through an interest in architecture and interior design. His fascination with blacksmithing inspired by the fantasy worlds of games, books and traditional arts led to the study of welding at St. Clair College.

While at St. Clair Alan became interested in the artistic potential of welding and the concept of honour in society from an inspiring elective course. The idea of cultural symbols from the course reinforced the teachings of a family friend around the importance of traditional arts and symbolism as she embraced her first nation roots through beading. Recognizing that Art was an unknown world to him, Alan sized the affordable opportunity to study fine art at St Lawrence when it presented itself.

Alan reached deep into himself to step into the unknown world of fine art impacted by the challenge of colour blindness and recognizing his inspiration from the people and natural world around him. Alan continues to celebrate the adventurous experience that creating art allows in an artist.

Artist Statement

I am an emerging artist, I enjoy working in the world of art as I am finding it is a way for me to explore and expand myself as a person within a community of creative people. Supported by the community’s energy and ideas,  I am inspired and motivated to experiment with Art. To me it is about having an open mind and a willingness to try new things knowing I would be challenged at times.

I love the feeling at the end of my work when I look at a piece and I can say I made that.  At that moment, I am celebrating as I have made a piece of Art that I am proud of and I often send all my friends and family pictures to show this piece of art.  To me, that feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction is what I love about being an artist.

As an emerging artist at the very beginning of my journey, I can say I am actively exploring variety in colours, shapes and textures and that my Art naturally change subject matters, I have bits and pieces of different materials and techniques that I like and look forward to working with again. When I work within Art materials and techniques I am constantly reminded that there are many many options for creating and I am still searching for my true medium. Thanks for joining me on my journey.
