Heather Morandin

Artist Bio

Heather is an emerging artist raised in Nepean, Ontario. Always having an interest in the arts, the quote “the work you do while you procrastinate is probably the work you should be doing for the rest of your life” inspired Heather to pursue her interest at the age of 17. Beginning the Visual and Creative Arts- Fine Arts program at St. Lawrence College in 2016 has allowed her to further explore her likes and dislikes in the art world. Favouring acrylic and charcoal, Heather is always discovering new ways of employing these mediums.

Taking influence from the work and ideas of Basquiat, Rauschenberg, Dali, and Carl Beam, Heather seeks to push boundaries with her work in both subject matter and technique. Challenging social standards and set normalities is used as a way to communicate what words can’t always achieve. With her art, Heather’s desire is to create a lasting impact by saying what most others are afraid to. Presenting touchy and often taboo concepts in a large-scale format, she seeks to make statements that are hard to ignore.

Artist Statement

I have always been fascinated by what goes against the status quo: body image, human activity, and social behavior. By acknowledging and respecting individual feelings and experiences, I am able to work these subjects into a visual representation and seek balance between raw honesty and visual aesthetic.

When working with sensitive subject matter, I strive to portray emotion more than anything. In my work, emotion lies within deep values, bold colour, textured detail, and a strategic use of negative space. With a strong focus on composition, contrast, and harmony, my aim is to create something thought provoking and memorable.

I try to be upfront about the realities of apprehensive issues such as self harm, eating disorders, and physicality. By making bold statements with my art, my ultimate goal is to create work that is of social relevance and won’t soon be forgotten.
