Meaghan Stevenson

Artist Bio

Meaghan was raised in a small village in Eastern Ontario, aptly nicknamed “The Village of Murals”. She was constantly surrounded by the beauty and artistry of this small community, and was encouraged in her art by her family and teachers from a very young age. Primarily working in oil and watercolour, Meaghan has begun to explore photography as a means of observation and creation.

Always seeking to explain and expose her thoughts and emotions, Meaghan feels the need to explore her community and the lives within it in order to push boundaries and create new streams of thought.

Meaghan is interested in the flow of life and society, and the way in which people interact and live within the constraints of modern life.  Influenced by painters such as Egon Schiele and Lucian Freud, and the photographers Martin Parr and Paul Graham, her images communicate something personal and yet universal.

Pieces of Meaghan’s work are held in private collections in Canada, United States, England, and Australia. She hold degrees in English and Art History, and diplomas in Visual & Fine Arts.

Artist Statement

My art focuses on my perception of the world and society. I use my art as a way to untangle the messy and complex parts of life. Using a variety of mediums, from photography to oil painting, my main goal within my art is to navigate my feelings and thoughts on the things I see and experience.

Subjects are all encompassing, nothing is too little or too big to explore through my art. I often try to bring together both the subjective and objective, delving into the relationship between the two. Experiencing and exploring both the apathy and the emotional saturation that is persistent within society today.

My art is a way to express something that often times seem inexpressible, a feeling or a thought that is too complex to simply describe with words. But, is often something that is so universal that every person is able, hopefully,  to relate and grasp something from my art.
